5 Star On-Water Hospitality!
We are now delighted to offer a new experience onboard Ataahua (Maori for ‘beautiful’) our beautiful new Bavaria Vision 42 yacht.
As well as providing the same unique and personalised hosted experience that we offered at Waipoua Lodge, a day aboard Ataahua will offer even more. From a wonderful onwater experience, coupled with relaxation, authentic history and stories, gourmet cuisine and of course to simply enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Northland’s Bay of Islands. Our commitment to sustainability is now more important than ever as we value the beautiful marine environment in which Ataahua will be sailing.
Being born and raised on the edge of Poole Harbour on the south coast of England, I grew up with boats. By age 4, my father built me a plywood rowing boat with a perspex viewing window in the bottom so I could watch the sea life pass underneath. A long rope ensured I did not drift too far! By age 6 I learnt the basics of sailing. Summers were spent sailing the harbour and the Solent (including the famous Cowes Week on the Isle of Wight). Subsequently, the school holidays were spent crossing the channel to Cherbourg from where our family cruised the Brittany Coast west and south before crossing over to the Channel Islands and then home to the UK. After moving to New Zealand in 1987, I had limited time on the water, but did enjoy owning a Sea Nymph Blazer and a Paul Whiting Reactor, each for a couple of years. However, the call of the sea has never been far away. I am really excited that today Ataahua offers me the magical opportunity of living and working aboard, plus sharing my passion with our wonderful guests. As well as years of experience on the water, I am a qualified Boatmaster.
I was born in Auckland and have always lived surrounded by the sea and was raised to enjoy being on and in the water. Most childhood summer holidays found my family and me enjoying our bach in Kawakawa Bay. Fishing and boating on the Waitemata Harbour filled our days. As my own family grew up, water skiing and fishing were a favourite pasttime. I have also enjoyed many opportunities to crew with friends on motor launches with trips to the islands of the Hauraki Gulf such as Great Barrier and Kawau. A keen diver, I have also got quite a few crayfish and scallop tales to tell! I have to admit that in the past I have always been used to power driven vessels, but my wife convinced me that we should buy a yacht! I now have to agree that Ataahua is a wonderful and fantastic new adventure! The exhillaration and yet real peace that sailing brings gives a whole new meaning to the saying “the journey is just as important as the destination”. As Ataahua’s qualified skipper and Boatmaster, I look forward to welcoming you aboard Ataahua and perhaps sharing the helm!
